Uwe Seidel received his Ph.D. degree in experimental physics and optics from the University of Jena, Germany, in 1996. He then worked for a leading photographic imaging company in the QA and R&D departments.
He joined the Forensic Science Institute of the German Federal Criminal Police Office (Bundeskriminalamt) as an ID document expert in January 2000. This assignment involves overseeing R&D projects for increasing the counterfeit resistance of German official documents. Dr. Seidel is currently involved in various activities dealing with the introduction of biometric technology into German travel documents. This task includes the design and operation of pilot schemes, all issues regarding the enolment and quality assurance of biometric features as well as standardization issues. He is an active member of ICAO's New Technology Working Group.
